A star college basketball player stumbles upon a mystery one night. He discovers a teenage girl sitting alone in the forested heart of New York City’s Central Park. She flees into the dark, leaving behind assorted clues.

She turns out to be sixteen-year-old Samantha Cooper, who says she visits the park at night to watch the fairies dance. She likes to escape into an intricate fantasy world of fairy kings and legends. But behind her flights of imaginative fancy lies a terrible secret. She’s anorexic and is slowly starving herself to death.

Trying to save her draws him into her dark family past and into conflict with his girlfriend. He begins to struggle on the basketball court, unable to connect to his old talent. He will eventually learn that, amid violence and lies and betrayal, only one true thing in this world endures.

Blue Fairy eBook Todd Barrows

Told from Gull's point of view, this story features several characters, each with their own version of fairies that take them away from away from reality. All of them are believable - there are no caricatures or cliches here. I especially like the way Charlene is handled - she could very easily be hateful in less sensitive hands, but the author sticks to Gull's feelings about his situation.

My only complaint would be that things wrap up a bit too nicely at the end. There are no consequences when the characters' fairy-worlds collide with reality. (Abe, one of Gull's roommates, just sort of disappears midway through the book.) And Gull seems to hold Sam at arm's length, though there is more going on in his friendship with her. He's too self-aware not to understand that, but we don't get a sense of any conflict within.
